NAPICU is a not for profit multi-disciplinary organisation, which was formally established in 1996 and is also a registered charity -SC048876. NAPICU is committed to promoting and developing the speciality of psychiatric intensive care and low secure services. Our members are mostly located in the United Kingdom (UK), and become members when working in specific wards or units, which join our association, or as individual mental health professionals from any discipline.

We also attract members from outside the UK. International members may also work in specific wards or units, which join our association, or join as individuals. If you wish to join the association from abroad there are discounted rates for all types of membership from developing nations.

We are also starting to form international affiliate groups around the world. Our first affiliate group has formed in Belgium.
International affiliate groups
An international affiliate of NAPICU is made up of professionals from several disciplines working in acute inpatient or emergency psychiatric services from any country outside the UK. Disciplines could include: patient representatives, carer representatives, service commissioners, policy makers, managers, professionals from non-healthcare interface agencies (e.g. criminal justice agencies), researchers, academics, educationalists, social services representatives, as well as healthcare clinicians of all disciplines (e.g. psychiatric / medical doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists). Services they work in would normally include mental health services of a similar nature to psychiatric intensive care and low secure services in the UK.
The affiliate then convenes a local group, specific to their country. To promote the shared aims of the organisation this group includes one member from the NAPICU Executive Committee to act as a link.
The aims of affiliate groups correspond to the spirit of the aims of NAPICU, although they may depart from these to reflect differences in terminology and health care delivery models around the world. The functions of the group would be: the progression of local strategic initiatives in psychiatric intensive care, and/or acute/emergency psychiatric care; international consultation exercises with NAPICU; signposting and facilitating local member wards to utilise their NAPICU membership (e.g. by hosting international quarterly meetings), attending UK meetings (free registration), and attending the NAPICU annual conference (discounted registration). They may also choose to organise one off international educational or research meetings or international conferences with NAPICU.
