    Understanding Substance Misuse in Clinical Settings

    with Matthew Young (Billy) who is a Dual Diagnosis Lead at Southwark acute inpatient services.

    Billy has worked in the substance misuse and mental health field for over 20 years. He is a qualified counsellor with BACP accreditation. With experience in both specialist community drug services and community mental health teams within the NHS since 2006, he has worked as a specialist dual diagnosis practitioner with SLAM since 2016 with 5 years spent with the liaison team at Lewisham hospital and the last two years working with acute inpatients across the Southwark wards and Place of Safety at the Maudsley. Billy has a BSc in Human Biology, Grad Dip in Addiction Studies and a PGDip in Integrative psychotherapy and counselling. His specific areas of interest are overdose prevention, harm minimisation and working with patients involved in Chemsex.

  • Reducing Restrictive Practice Course

    Reducing Restrictive Practice Course

    This will be one of the only online courses in the UK which has reducing restrictive practice as the focus. We will be providing a summary of the burgeoning evidence about restrictive practice in mental health; the background, political landscape, clinical factors, guidelines, and the available evidence about ways to reduce restrictive practice in psychiatry.

    The national experts in psychiatric intensive care will be responsible for providing much of the teaching content. This is a five-week course with 3 hours of learning per week. The course will be assessed by peer feedback and learners will be guided through this process. There will be discussion boards which will enable networking and sharing of knowledge, and good practice across the sector.

    The Acute, Intensive and Emergency Psychiatric Care course is for anyone working in the area of psychiatry (inpatient, psychiatric intensive care, home treatment teams, liaison psychiatry, or prisons) who wants to further their knowledge and practical skills.

    The course will be delivered onsite and face to face. You will be taught by experts in the fields of mental health nursing, psychiatry, pharmacology, and mental health law.  Discussions and sharing of experiences and knowledge are encouraged during these sessions.

    Speciality: psychiatrists (envisaged those near the end of training), senior nursing staff, occupational therapists, pharmacists, social workers
