Publication of NAPICU Prison Guidance

NAPICU is pleased to publish “The Referral and Admission of Prisoners to General Adult Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) Quality and Good Practice Guidance”.

This guidance has been developed over the past 2 years, we extend our gratitude to all those who gave their time and expertise.

There are 80 thousand people in UK prisons many of which require mental health care. How best to meet the needs of people in prison has been a centrally important and at times contentious issue for policymakers as well as clinicians. All too often, there are delays and challenges with the collaboration amongst different facets of mental health services in meeting the needs of people in prison who should not be disadvantaged compared to those in the general community.

Over the past 2 years, there have been several debates as to how best the general adult PICU can fulfil its role in helping people already significantly disadvantaged because of imprisonment. The PICU should not seek to exclude purely on the basis of imprisonment and must take its place in helping some of those in greatest need of care and support. For more background on the issues underpinning the current guidance, you may find the editorials on the guidance development interesting. Please check out the following links National guidance for transfer of prisoners to PICUs and PICU and Prison

We are pleased to acknowledge the support of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Royal College of Nursing in endorsing the project.

The guidance will be updated in real time on the basis of further feedback with any adjustments identified within the document.

If you have any questions or further feedback, please do not hesitate to contact us.
